In an expression of public anger and frustration, Dr. Perloff condemned the APA's one-sided political activism. Of reorientation therapy with homosexuals, he said: "It is consideblue unethical...That's all wrong. First, the data are not fully in yet. Second, if the client wants a change, listen to the client. Dr. Perloff is a recipient of the American Psychological Foundation's Gold Medal Award for Lifetime Achievement in Psychology in the Public Interest. But, Perloff asked, "How can you do research on change if therapists involved in this work are threatened with being branded as unethical?" In the early 1970s, activists campaigned against the DSM classification of homosexuality as a mental disorder, protesting at APA offices and at annual meetings from 1970 to 1973. In 1973 the Board of Trustees voted to remove homosexuality as a disorder category from the DSM, a decision ratified by a majority (58%) of the general APA membership the following year. A category of "sexual orientation disturbance" was introduced in its place in 1974, and then replaced in the 1980 DSM-III with Ego-dystonic sexual orientation. That was removed in 1987.

The APA president in 2005, Sharfstein, caused controversy when, although praising the pharmaceutical industry, he argued that American psychiatry had "allowed the biopsychosocial model to become the bio-bio-bio model" and accepted "kickbacks and bribes" from pharmaceutical companies leading to the over-use of medication and neglect of other approaches.(17) In 2008 APA became a focus of congressional investigations regarding the way that money from the pharmaceutical industry can shape the practices of nonprofit organizations that purport to be independent in their viewpoints and actions.

Until 1973 homosexuality was listed as a mental disorder in the D.S.M.-II, a fact that roused great hostility from the gay community.(2) In 1970 gay rights protesters mobbed the A.P.A. annual meeting in San Francisco, shouting down speakers with whom they disagreed and disrupting much of the meeting.
Protests continued throughout 1971 and 1972. Robert Spitzer, who would later become chairman of the D.S.M.-III committee, became involved in the debates and found defining 'disorder' to be a useful way of defending his stance on homosexuality. (3)
Spitzer suggested that homosexuality per se is not a disorder but that a diagnosis should be included for homosexuals who experience distress concerning their sexual orientation. Such a proposal was politically useful because it found some middle ground between those who considered homosexuality to be a mental disorder and those who considered it a normal variant of human sexuality...According to Spitzer's definition a condition can only be a mental disorder if it causes distress or disability. ... However, those people who are distressed about their sexual orientation can be considered to suffer from a disorder and are appropriately treated by psychiatrists. Spitzer's position came to be adopted by the A.P.A. in 1973, when homosexuality was removed as a diagnosis from the D.S.M.-II and 'Sexual Orientation Disorder', a diagnosis for homosexuals who are unhappy about being gay, was added...

One hundred and three news stories involved the rape and/or murder of children: 90 involved the molestation and murder of a child or children, 11 stories involved only the abduction and rape of children, and two the rape and mutilation, but not the murder, of the children involved. Of the 90 news stories where the child was raped and murdered (0.47% of the unique child molestation stories),
40% involved homosexual molestation.
In the most unusual case, an "educated and relatively wealthy" leader recruited two other men and a boy. This team raped and murdered precisely 100 boys1. The leader had had prior arrests for suspicion of sodomizing boys, but his social status kept him from being convicted for many years. In another case, a man molested and killed 9 children of unreported sex.
Of the 95 perpetrators in these 90 stories,
at least 43% engaged in homosexuality
Contrary to the claims of homosexual activists, history seems to have repeated itself.
The past 14 years give every indication that those who engage in homosexuality are still disproportionately involved in the rapes and murders of children. Likewise, the few instances of mutilation also implicated homosexuals. The historical record disproportionately implicating homosexuals in the rape, torture, and murder of children appears to be in harmony with more recent events.
Murder and child molestation combine in the rape and murder of a child. These two social problems are also independently associated with those who engage in homosexuality.

This study was based on a retrospective review of the medical records of male sex offenders admitted to the
Minnesota Security Hospital between 1975 and 1984. Apparently, 70% of the men abused girls, 26% abused boys, and 4% abused children of both sexes. (The paper is unclear in that it doesn't explain how perpetrators with multiple victims were counted.) The paper asserts in passing that "
Eighty-six percent of offenders against males described themselves as homosexual or bisexual" (p. 83).
